Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a structured therapeutic approach that uses writing to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. While it may seem similar to journaling or creative writing because it involves the written word, WET is unique. Unlike personal writing done independently, WET takes place entirely within the counseling session under the guidance of a trained therapist. This setting provides professional support and ensures a safe, focused environment for processing difficult emotions.
Written Exposure Therapy (WET) has been extensively researched and shown to be most effective when done using handwriting. Writing by hand engages the brain in a unique way, facilitating deeper processing of emotions and memories. Using a computer, phone, tablet, or other electronic device may not produce the same therapeutic benefits. However, if a physical injury or other condition makes handwriting impossible, WET can be modified to accommodate electronic devices, or we can explore alternative treatment options tailored to your needs.
You don’t need to be a skilled writer to benefit from Written Exposure Therapy (WET). This approach isn’t about grammar, punctuation, or creating a polished piece of writing—it’s about expressing your thoughts and feelings as they come to you. The process is what matters most, not the quality of the writing.
The structure of WET will guide you step by step, helping you focus on what’s most important. Remember, this is a judgment-free zone—your writing will only be read by your non-judgmental therapist who will gently guide you through the protocol and will be cheerleading you every step of the way. . You might be surprised at how healing it can be, regardless of how “good” a writer you think you are.
